OVERVIEW

Events is a classic Wedding Venue looking to develop a new mobile app “Events Catering” which strives to provide an easy catering selection experience for their clients

They target users 20 - 65 years of age who are looking to make their catering selection in a seamless and quick way. This project was completed as part of the Google UX Design certification program. While this product is not a live business, the project followed a real-world design process and constraints.

THE PROBLEM

Busy working adults don't have time to scroll through extensive lists of options + They don't know if their options are of quality/economical

GOAL

Design a Catering Menu App that can narrow down food options by users' choice and offer competitive pricing

1 on 1 Interviews

A primary user group was identified. Busy, working adults who have a tight budget. The research confirmed my assumptions of them wanting to find catering options that were economical, but I also found that they faced other challenges due to their goals, expectations, and obligations that made it difficult to select a catering service.

Users were concerned with the lack of variety of food options. They want to accommodate all their guests.

Young adults want options that are transparent about price up front.

Most working adults have busy schedules and need a way to filter options that can accommodate their needs.

Catering services may show high level quality content online, but do not match in person. Users want a real idea of the service, and food quality.

ITERATIONS

I prioritized features that would easily demonstrate price comparisons and a quick way to narrow down catering options to each users’ desired taste

Several iterations of each screen of the app were drawn on paper in order to select the most suitable elements for the digital wireframes. This would ensure the users pain points were addressed.

Usability Test Findings

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

SOLUTION

Refining the Design

I realized we don't need to reinvent the wheel. The Questionnaire button was confusing, so a filter button was added for a simpler way to customize food selections.

A note was also added clarifying that a tasting would be provided before paying in full so users can see the quality of food themselves before fully committing along with client reviews.

Once reviewing their items, users can now see an estimate of what it would cost and have the choice to use the price adjuster feature to see lower priced alternatives. This feature was added since users expressed concern about expensive prices.

Users were confused about the "budget adjuster" label so I changed the wording to "price adjuster" and included a brief description of its functionality for clarity.

The price adjuster feature was confusing to users so I added a tool tip to explain what this section meant. The user can see the new estimate generated and decide if they would like to make the adjustment or go back to their original quote and keep their selections.

Another change made was adding a calendar view option when selecting the date as opposed to the drop down. Users wanted an easier way to see the date and actual day of the week they'd be selecting

Finally, users can finish scheduling their food tasting with ease and a final summary to confirm.

Users will feel like their needs are met and anticipated when using the Events Catering app.
