Designing a digital platform for recent graduates to connect with a career coach

MY ROLE
UX + UI Designer/ UX Researcher

OVERVIEW
A Responsive Website and App for Social Good
The goal was to build a platform where recent graduates can find a Career Coach who can train and guide them through the process of landing a good entry-level role.
This project was completed as part of the Google UX Design certification program. While this product is not a live business, the project followed a real-world design process and constraints.
THE PROBLEM
Grads don't have real world experience +
Current sites don't meet all grads needs
UXR
Screening Survey + 1 on 1 Interviews
When conducting user interviews I found out that users had a hard time finding career coaching services that would align with their budget and needs. There are several existing services but most users still didn't feel confident that it was worth the investment and they didn't know if the coach would actually help. Pain points:

Users are concerned with the coach's teaching style. They don't think they can easily find someone who can adapt to their way of learning.

Many coaching sites are overwhelming and don't focus only on mentoring.

Very expensive for most recent grads.
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
Three Gaps Identified
01
Career coaching is an option instead of the main feature
Most websites are a bit overwhelming with the amount of information provided
02
Lack of filtering
Most websites have hundreds of coaches to pick from
03
No app
There are only web services, but no app for them

Designing Based on Research
Based on my user research, I designed a sequential flow to narrow down career coaches for users. It began with asking what areas they needed most help with amongst other categories.

Testing the Flow
I conducted an unmoderated usability study with 8 participants. After my study I found that as recent graduates, users felt a lot of pressure when having to secure their first job. Findings:

Users need more information upfront before committing

Users need an alternative to paying same day

Users need more cues detailing the purpose of the flow

Final Product (Web)
In my first design, I asked a few questions to get to know the user and filter a list of potential coaches. I realized users needed more information and needed to gain trust. In this iteration, a JobHunt team member will schedule a 1 on 1 call to get to know the user first and find the best match for them based on that session.
That expectation is set on the first page in the "What to expect?" section.

All users expressed financial concern and didn't want to pay for expensive sessions online. Now, I emphasize that there will be no upfront cost. New grads don't pay until they secure their dream job. This way they see the value their coach brings.
It is clarified further in the FAQ

It was important to me that the navigation was as easy as can be. See the flow to schedule a call.

Responsive
The header is expanded in the desktop version. The "coaches" tab will allow users to browse through all coaches in the program, the "advice" tab will show best practices posted by the coaches.

Designing the App
How might we design an app to keep the user and the coach connected throughout their sessions?
UXR
Usability Testing
I recruited 5 participants who tested my lo-fi screens for the app. They were asked to complete a series of tasks in the prototype.

Final Product (App)
Once a user is working with their coach, they can chat with them, continue to schedule sessions, track their job applications, and review any notes and recorded sessions via the app. Here is the dashboard:

Users can check off any tasks they have assigned from their coach or they can manually add their own. They can also set due dates and reminders.

The navigation menu can take users to the calendar to see upcoming sessions and schedule a new session or reschedule.
Users also have access to seeing all coaches in the JobHunt network.

It was important to keep communication and engagement alive so I made sure to have features such as a direct chat with the coach and notifications to remind users of important events.
